Logistics for transporting LNG through rivers in the Amazon is the heart of the Uirapuru Gás & Energy Project and also a great challenge, considering the continental distances of the region and also due to the cryogenic characteristic of the product, at -162ºC.
The logistics for transporting LNG from the terminal in Manaus will be carried out by small scale LNG barges fleets, under the responsibility of local shipping companies with which Amazonica Energy has commercial partnerships.
The Amazon waterway is the main route of transportation in Northern Brazil. The two main cities are Belém, capital of the State of Pará, located at the South Bar of Amazonas river, and Manaus, capital of the State of Amazonas, located at the junction of Negro and Solimões rivers, about 1,700 km upstream. The waterway has a heavy traffic of all sorts of goods particularly grains exported from the Western States though the Madeira, Tocantins and Tapajós rivers.
Some customers operate in facilities located on rivers banks that during the dry seasons reach 3 meters draft. The inland navigation project for transporting LNG, therefore, considers fleets of small-scale LNG barges with a capacity of up to 2,000m3 LNG and 2-meter draft navigation. Thus, it will be possible to deliver LNG uninterrupted throughout the year to customers located in the most remote areas of the states of Amazonas, Rondônia, Acre and Roraima.
